When building on or near hills, runoff can become a problem that leads to erosion of your landscape, or worse, flooding inside your yard or home. One way to control this is by using natural materials, like rock, to direct the flow of water away from where its not wanted.
There are two main ways to accomplish this. The first is through what is called a “French drain.” French drains are trenches that are dug at the bottom of a slope and filled with gravel. These are then covered with landscape fabric and sod, to create an invisible way to reroute runoff.
Another, more visible method is by building small terraces using rock walls. These walls can be very attractive and can even be used to create raised flower beds. Retaining walls need to be very carefully planned to ensure that there is no erosion at the base and that runoff is directed appropriately. The terraces and walls will slow the rate of runoff, but will not necessarily prevent it from occurring.
No matter which method you choose, be sure to check local building and safety ordinances, particularly if there will be digging involved. Remember, protect yourself while protecting your land!
